Water Filters

Using a water filter is a fast and very easy way to obtain drinkable water from a stream, river, pond, or puddle.  Whether you choose to use a filter pump or filter straw to “clean” the water, the process is the same.  The dirty water is pumped or drawn through a filter that purifies the water by removing sediment and pathogenic microorganisms and making the water safe to drink.

Several of the most popular water filters are recommended below.

Katadyn Pocket Water Microfilter

Highly Recommended: This a more expensive and top of the line water filter.  This pump style filter uses a silver-impregnated ceramic element to remove bacteria and protozoa.  It filters out all microorganisms larger than 0.2 microns to provide you with clear, drinkable water.  The filter weighs just 20 ounces , measures 10 inches by 2.4 inches, is cleanable, and can provide a 1 quart-per-minute output.  In my opinion, what makes this filter special is that it can produce 13,000 gallons of drinkable water – – –  something you want in a survival situation.  Amazon customers rated this water filter as 4.8 out of 5 stars.

Hiker Pro Microfilter

This is another quality pump style water filter from Katadyn that uses 129 inches of pleated 0.3 micron glass fiber media for its microfiltration system to clean the water, has a carbon core that helps remove odors and unpleasant tastes from the water, and weighs just 11 ounces.  It has an output of 1 quart per minute and can produce up to 200 gallons of drinkable water.  This filter is also just 6.5 inches tall but has a 36 inch hose to access the water source.  Amazon customer rated this filter as 4.1 out of 5 stars.

Aquamira Frontier Emergency Water Filter System

This is an inexpensive straw style water filter that can filter up to 20 gallons of water.  The filter weighs less than 1 ounce and uses a particle blend to clean the water and make it drinkable.  Its compact size makes it easy to carry in a backpack or pocket.  For best results, this filter should be used in conjunction with water treatment/purifier tablets.  Amazon customers awarded this filter 4.3 out of 5 stars.
