Sleeping Bags

Choosing a sleeping bag is so much a matter of personal preference (e.g., I personally prefer the “mummy” style sleeping bag, while others may prefer the traditional shape sleeping bag) that I at first was somewhat hesitant to offer my recommendations.  A top of the line sleeping bag can cost almost $1000 (e.g., the Valandre Thor 1350 Sleeping Bag and the Western Mountaineering Bison Gore WS Sleeping Bag), and they come down in price from there (e.g., Marmot Col EQ-20 Down Sleeping Bag).  In addition, you have left zipper and right zipper bags, different colored bags, bags with different insulation, and bags that are made for temperatures down to a specific level (e.g., 30 degrees, 20 degrees, 0 degrees, and lower).

However, to help the visitors to this website sort through the literally hundreds of sleeping bags that are available, I have listed my recommendations below.

(I might add that choosing a sleeping bag online provides you with a considerable advantage over going to your local sporting goods/camping store.  Online you have access to a much larger selection of sleeping bags, the customer feedback reviews of past buyers are usually far more helpful than the information provided by either the store worker in response to your questions or the information printed on the carton of the boxed sleeping bag, and the price is almost always lower too.)

Suisse Sport Adult Adventurer Mummy Ultra-Compactable Sleeping Bag

This is an affordable and very popular mummy style sleeping bag.  The bag weighs only 2.9 pounds, measures 29.5 inches by 84.5 inches when open (so a tight fit for guys with wide shoulders when you zip it up), and has a temperature rating of down to 30 degrees Fahrenheit.   One of the biggest pluses of this bag is that it compresses into a very compact size in the stuff sack that comes with the bag.  Amazon customer rating for this sleeping bag is 4.2 out of 5 stars.
