Fire Starter

If you don’t have a match, a Fire Starter is the next best thing to use to start a fire.  Fire starters are very light and very compact and therefore are very easy to carry in a pocket or backpack.  There is a knack to using a fire starter, but it is easily learned.  And just like learning to ride a bike or to use flint and steel, once you learn how to do it, you don’t forget.  I am recommending below several well known and highly regarded fire starters, and of those which ones that I have highly recommended.

Swedish Firesteel – Army Model

Highly Recommended: The Swedish Firesteel – Army Model is a very high quality fire starter.  It is widely used and extremely popular.  The manufacturer says it will last through 12,000 strikes.  This fire starter has been approved by the International Survival Instructors Association.  Amazon customers awarded it a 4.7 out of 5 stars rating.

Swedish Firesteel – Scout Model

The Firesteel Scout Model is similar to the Firsteel Army Model above but only good for about 3,000 strikes.  Amazon customer awarded it a 4.6 out of 5 star rating.

Genuine Issue Magnesium Survival Firestarter

I added this fire starter to my recommended list of fire starters because I have personally used this particular fire starter many times.  I was surprised that Amazon customers had only awarded it with a 3.9 out of 5 stars rating, but after thinking about it, this starter is a little more work to use.

Coleman Magnesium Fire Starter

The Coleman Magnesium Fire starter is great. I’ve personally used it a number of times on camping trips. It creates nice shavings of magnesium, and the striker creates good sparks on every strike. If you have your kindling and tender ready, you can easily start fires in a couple of minutes with this fire starter.
